Fun-Filled Irish Wedding in Spain | Colleen & Mike | Murcia, Costa Blanca

Mar 2, 2024 | Venues, Weddings

Colleen & Mike’s Big Beautiful Fun-Filled Irish Wedding at La Herencia Celebraciones, Murcia, Costa Blanca on 4 August 2023

In this blog, I will introduce you to Colleen & Mike from County Cork, Southern Ireland, and their fun-filled Irish wedding in Spain. We’ll explore why the couple chose to have their bespoke wedding in the Murcia Region of Spain, the factors into choosing their venue, why having a Wedding Planner can be a good investment, deciding on the vibe of their ceremony, introducing rituals within the ceremony and why they were important to the couple, Irish blessings and a folk song accompanied by the ‘Fife’, and my top tip when writing your wedding vows.

GETTING MARRIED IN SPAIN AT A VENUE THAT JUST KEEPS ON GIVING – LA HERENCIA CELEBRACIONES, MURCIA

When Irish couple Colleen & Mike chose me to be their wedding celebrant for their big Irish wedding ceremony in Spain in August, they’d already chosen a venue big enough to house all of their 250 plus guests, all from Ireland! Yep it was a biggie!

They chose La Herencia Celebraciones in Murcia the moment they stepped through the venue’s grand wooden doors and saw the most amazing space.  Meeting the staff, the in-house chef along with being blown away by the stunning grounds with large separate spacious areas for the ceremony, the dinner and dancing, and even a large swimming pool, were all drivers for the couple making their decision.

It also helped that Colleen’s parents own a holiday home a mere 20 minutes drive from the venue and with a number of guests being able to stay locally in Los Alcazares a mere 15 minutes away, and with Murcia’s International Airport just 20 minutes away also, the deal was sealed.

WHY HAVING A WEDDING PLANNER CAN BE ONE OF THE BEST INVESTMENTS WHEN PLANNING FOR A WEDDING.

Colleen & Mike made the very wise choice to hire a wedding planner very early on, which without doubt made their day appear seamless and run like clockwork.  Yes lots of couples decide to go it alone, but when you are investing so much time, energy and money into the best day of your lives, having someone who had years of experience and makes everything look easy (trust me it’s not!) and who has a list of reliable, good and professional suppliers is a godsend, and unless you can speak the language, sometimes the vision you may have for your perfect wedding day can turn into a bit of a nightmare.

Plus with just over 200 guests at this Irish wedding in Spain, having someone coordinating your whole day just takes out all the stress for everyone concerned.

I know I personally always breathe a sigh of relief when I hear a couple has a wedding planner as it also makes my job easier, which isn’t a bad thing!

SETTING THE STYLE AND VIBE OF THE CEREMONY SPACE

Colleen & Mike’s wedding ceremony took place under a purpose built pergola which in August I can tell you was a life saver for all.  The ceremony space was so beautifully and stylishly set out, giving off a romantic boho style vibe, and the couple were able to sit down on a beautiful snug loveseat for two and enjoy their ceremony.

With every attention to detail fully taken care of by the amazing Wedding Planner, Pilar and her team, the whole setting looked amazing. From the beautiful floral displays at the altar space to hand held fans on each chair to heel savers for the ladies wearing heels to stop them sinking into the grass, to a drinks station serving up ice cold beverages, enabled all the guests to hydrate beforehand ensuring everyone was relaxed and could just sit back and enjoy the ceremony.

Every tiny detail was thought of and executed with precision and a smile by Pilar and her wonderfully dedicated team!

DECIDING ON THE WEDDING CEREMONY VIBE

Colleen & Mike’s brief to me when we first met over a video call was that they wanted their ceremony to be relaxed, personal and fun making it the best wedding that they and their guests had ever attended, and let me tell you, it didn’t disappoint, in fact it delivered in bucket loads!  This globetrotting couple gave me so much content to work with that I was bursting with excitement when their day came round and I got to do my thing and bring their script to life for them!  Whilst I weaved their love story into their ceremony, I spent most of my time with a big smile on my face!

This was a couple who met when they were still in single digits at primary school and shared their first kiss on the school coach on their way to play hurling.  Sitting on the coach Colleen remembers Mike always sitting on the back seats and would roll her eyes thinking to herself “urgh, he just thinks he’s so cool”.  Well it transpires that what she really meant was that she actually fancied the pants off of him! This got big laughs from all the guests!

HOW THE COUPLE’S IRISH HERITAGE INFLUENCED THEIR CEREMONY WITH WEDDING READINGS:

Cultural Irish Rituals and Irish Readings within a wedding ceremony can elevate the ceremony itself.

There were many nods to the couple’s Irish heritage throughout their wedding day, and so there was always going to be an Irish Wedding Blessing or two included.

Here were two of those four Irish blessings:

  • “May you always walk in sunshine. May you never want for more. May Irish angels rest their wings Right beside your door.
  • Agus tú ag cur tús le do thuras le chéile, ná déanaimis do ghrá agus do thiomantas dá chéile a dhoimhniú agus a mhéadú ach le gach lá a rith.
  • Translated as – As you begin your journey together, may your love and commitment to each other only deepen and grow with each passing day.

INTRODUCING SIMPLE RITUALS INTO A WEDDING CEREMONY CAN BE A VISUAL DELIGHT FOR YOUR GUESTS AS WELL AS BEING SYMBOLIC TO THE COUPLE

The Couple Chose the following rituals for their Irish ceremony in Spain:

  • Unity Candle Ritual
  • 1st Anniversary letter in Wine Box
  • Ring Warming Ritual

It’s so easy to introduce a symbolic ritual into a wedding ceremony that is warmly received by guests.  Colleen & Mike wanted to include as many family members as possible and so after my initial welcome and a few words we jumped into the first ritual which was The Unity Candle Ritual which involved three family members.  This represented both families coming together along with taking a moment to remember all those loved ones who had passed but believed to be with us in spirit.

A little later just before reading their vows, we introduced The Wine Box Ritual where the couple each placed a letter they had previously written for the other.  With the letters placed alongside a special bottle of Champagne, gifted to them by the bride’s sister, the box was then sealed.  It will then be reopened on their 1st wedding anniversary when they can read their love letters whilst sipping on champagne..how very romantic!

RING WARMING RITUAL AND AN IRISH FOLK SONG & FIFE

Another Irish wedding ritual the couple had decided on just before the exchange of rings was a Ring Warming Ritual where both the rings are handed round to all the guests (a bit like the children’s game, pass the parcel!).  With the guests imparting their love and best wishes onto the rings, before the bride & groom then exchange rings, with the idea being that everyone’s love & wishes are firmly embedded into the heart of each ring that the couple will subsequently wear forever.

Of course with so many guests this was quite a feat and so to keep everyone entertained they had two of their good friends – one who sang an Irish folk song called ‘When You Were Sweet Sixteen’ and boy, she had the voice of an angel, and was beautifully accompanied by her male companion who played the Fife which is similar to a Piccalo – it was a harmony made in heaven and an absolute delight for me to be able to sit back and soak up the wonderful emotion of that moment in time.

Being that ninety percent of the wedding guests were from Ireland, suddenly, half way through the song, a low hum began to emulate all around, and I realised that some of the guests had joined in, then more, before a gentle choir of angels was harmonising in the background.  It was such a magical moment that it made the hairs on my arm stand up!

PERSONALISED WEDDING VOWS

My Top Tip:  Be Authentic To Yourselves

It was important to Colleen & Mike to write heartfelt wedding vows to each other.  After sending over my vow ideas sheet, when I then spoke with them as I do with every couple, my advice was to be authentic to yourselves and don’t think what you should or shouldn’t write, shoot from the hip with what feels natural to you and your relationship.  If that includes little innuendos or nuances about your partner, go for it and when you are standing there facing each other, imagine it is just the two of you talking to the other.

Some couples want their guests to hear them read their personal vows, so at this stage I handed the microphone over, or alternatively, you may choose to keep this part more private which can make the moment feel more intimate.

Colleen started her vows by saying:  “Mike, when I sat down to write my vows I realised there was no way I could possibly convey how much you mean to me in 90 secs, but then I had a bottle of wine and the words started pouring out”…There were lots of beautiful heartfelt words from there along with some funnies that were personal to them as a couple.

Sealing their first kiss as newlyweds the guests whooped and clapped with some crying happy tears.  With the saxophonist blasting out the tune “Jubel” by Klingande, Colleen & Mike danced their way back down the aisle, skipping through their arch of hurling sticks, with all their family and friends following on behind, where the fun continued into the early hours of the morning.

When couples invest in their wedding ceremony it can make it quite magical and memorable and remember, as an experienced celebrant, it’s my job to help you achieve the ceremony of your dreams!

REVIEWS FROM THE IRISH WEDDING

HAPPY REVIEW FROM COLLEEN AND MIKE

“From the moment we contacted Sally to be a celebrant for our wedding, we knew we made the right decision.  Sally made our ceremony so special, so personal, funny and emotional, it was everything we imagined and more.  Nothing was a problem with Sally, she is so fun yet so professional.  Her calming and caring nature just set the tone for our ceremony and we both felt super relaxed throughout.  All our family & friends had nothing but high praise for the ceremony itself and Sally.
